TC Spec. AWWA D103-97
Bolted Smoothwall Tank Specifications
General
The Engineer's selection of factory-coated bolted steel tank construction for this facility has been predicated upon the design criteria and construction methods specified. Deviations from the specified design and construction details will not be permitted.
Drawings and Specifications
After receipt of order, the Vendor is required to furnish, for the approval of the Engineer, complete specification and construction drawings for all work shown on the bid drawings. When approved, one set of such prints will be returned to the Vendor marked Approved, and these drawings will govern the work detailed. The approval by the Engineer of the Contractor's drawings shall be an approval relating only to their general conformity with the bid drawings and specifications.
The Owner’s drawings and specifications showing general dimensions and construction details shall govern construction. After approval by the Engineer of detailed drawings prepared by the Vendor, there shall be no deviation from the drawings and specifications except upon written order or approval from the Engineer.
Qualification of Bidder
The Bidder shall be a specialist in the design and fabrication of factory-coated, bolted steel tanks. Bidder shall also submit, upon request, a list of five comparable tanks now in service in the United States for references.

- Material Specifications
Tank Structure
The materials, design, fabrication, and erection of the bolted steel tank shall conform to AWWA standard for "Factory-Coated Bolted Steel Tanks for Water Storage" - ANSI/AWWA D103-97 specification.
- Materials - Carbon Steel
- Sheet - Steel sheets shall conform to or shall be at least equal to hot-rolled quality per ASTM A570 Grade 40 with a minimum yield strength of 40,000 psi. Minimum thickness shall be 12-gauge (0.0972").
- Plate - Steel plates shall conform to or at least be equal to the requirements of ASTM A36 with a minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi.
- Structural Shapes - Carbon steel structural shapes shall conform to ASTM A36.
- Bolts
- Galvanized bolts, nuts, and washers used in tank connections shall be minimum 1/2" diameter and shall meet the minimum requirements of AWWA D103, Section 2.2.
- Poly-capped bolt heads shall be used for additional corrosion protection.
- Other bolts shall meet or exceed ASTM A307.
Option: Additionally, any steel nuts that are in contact with the liquid in the tank shall be factory-encapsulated so that the nut forms one piece with the corrosion-resistant encapsulation material.
- Gaskets & Sealants
- Flanged panel designs shall incorporate an EPDM prefabricated gasket minimum width of 1-3/4". Buna nitrile gasket will be used for wastewater applications.
- Flat panel designs shall utilize a mastic sealant, which is a one component, moisture cured, polyurethane compound. The sealant shall be suitable for contact with potable water and shall be certified to meet ANSI/NSF Additives Standard 61. Sealant will be used to seal lap joints and bolt connections. The sealant shall cure to rubber-like consistency, have excellent adhesion to the epoxy coating, low shrinkage, and be suitable for interior and external use.
-
Coatings
All carbon steel plates, members, and miscellaneous parts (excluding appurtenances) shall be factory coated in accordance with the provisions of Section B of these specifications. Coatings will be in accordance with AWWA D103, Section 10.6 and interior coatings shall be NSF standard 61 approved. Field coating, except for touch-up will not be permitted.
- Appurtenances/Accessories
- Hatch - The tank roof shall have a curbed, upward opening 24" square. The curb shall extend at least four inches above the tank. The hatch cover lip shall be hinged and provisions made for locking. The hatch cover lip should extend for a distance of two inches down on the outside of the curb.
- Vent - A mushroom-screened vent shall be furnished above maximum water level of sufficient size to accommodate normal inlet and outlet flow. The overflow pipe shall not be considered to be a tank vent. The vent shall be so designed and constructed as to prevent the entrance of birds or animals.
- Inlet and Outlet Connections - Inlet, outlet, and overflow connections shall conform to the sizes and locations specified on the plan sheets.
- Outside Tank Ladder - An outside OSHA ladder shall be furnished at the location designated.
- Galvanized Handrail and Toeboard - Handrail and toeboard around the deck perimeter shall be installed as specified on the plan sheets.
- Liquid Level Indicator - A liquid level indicator with stainless steel float and target board shall be installed as detailed on the plans and to the tank manufacturer’s specifications.
- Internal Nozzle with Overflow Weir Cone - The internal nozzle with overflow weir shall conform to the size and location specified on the plan sheets.
- 24" Diameter Shell Manway - The shell manway shall conform to the sizes and locations specified on the plan sheets.
- Tank Foundation
- The tank foundation shall be designed by the Owner's Engineer to safely sustain the loads from the tank.
- Steel Bottom Tanks - The foundation shall be installed per AWWA D103-97, Section 11.4. Supplying and installing these foundation materials shall be the responsibility of the buyer.
- The foundation shall be level with differential not exceeding +/- 1/8 inch in any 30 foot circumference under the shell. The level on the circumference shall not vary more than +/- 1/4 inch from an established plane.
Option: Base setting stave placement and concrete shall be done in accordance with the tank manufacturer’s recommendations. The tank manufacturer shall certify the placement of the setting stave ring.
- Shipping
- All tanks, structures, and miscellaneous parts shall be packaged for shipment in such a fashion as to minimize abrasion or scratching of finished coating system.
- Shipment will be by truck or ocean container if export.
